Twenty one looks for the desert epic. Sun bleached ochre, heat haze, hard light and deep shadow, and the cold blue of night in the same world.

Every look ships twice, once for Rec.709 footage and once as a log conversion with the transform baked in. Forty two .cube files in total.

Four families, one world

The looks are grouped by shooting condition, so you can find the right one in the middle of a session rather than clicking through a list. Each family runs from a subtle grade that will carry a whole sequence up to a full strength hero look.

Each strip below a look is sampled from that look's own output, ordered from shadow on the left to highlight on the right. They are what the LUT actually does, not colours picked to match.

High Sun

Midday, with nowhere to hide

Overhead and hard. Bleached stone, an ochre cast, and a ceiling on the highlights so nothing runs away to white. Five looks.

OCHRE
Subtle warm daylight. Sits under a whole sequence without announcing itself.
HAMADA
Bleached stone plateau. Warm mids with the colour drained out of the top end.
KHAMSIN
Hot wind off the sand. Full ochre cast with a hard ceiling on the highlights.
ANVIL
Hard overhead light. Deep contrast, crushed toe, warmth held in the mids.
KILN
The trailer grade. Saturated amber, black crushed, everything on one axis.

Dust

Air you can see

Haze, lift and atmosphere. Blacks off the floor, contrast pulled down, colour thinned by everything hanging between you and the subject. Five looks.

LOESS
Fine airborne silt. A whisper of lift and diffusion, nothing more.
ERG
Open sand sea. Warm dusty midtone, gentle lift, the workhorse of the family.
HABOOB
Dust storm. Blacks lifted well off the floor, contrast down, colour thinned.
SIMOOM
Hotter and heavier than a haboob. Dense warm haze with the heat still in it.
SABKHA
Salt flat. Near monochrome sepia, the whole frame collapsed onto a single hue.

Cold Side

When the heat goes out of the day

Dusk and night. Cool skies over warm ground, with skin held back out of the shift so faces stay warm while the sky goes cold. Seven looks.

VESPERS
Dusk. Cool sky over warm ground, skin held back out of the shift.
VESPERS FULLno skin hold
The same dusk split with nothing protected. Cooler, more graphic, less forgiving.
NADIR
Late dusk. Colder through the mids, darker, with warmth only in the face.
UMBRA
Open shade. Close to neutral, low saturation, cool without going blue.
COBALT
Night. Dense blue with a warm floor kept under the shadows so it does not go flat.
OBSIDIAN
Teal against amber at full strength, with skin gated out of the cool shift.
OBSIDIAN FULLno skin hold
The graphic version. Nothing protected, the cool shift takes everything with it.

Blue Accent

Keep the one cold thing

Desert tones kept intact, with a cold element isolated and driven, so a blue eye, a practical light or a costume detail survives a grade that would otherwise flatten it. Four looks.

LAPISbroad
Warm sand with every cool tone held and lifted. The broad one: it catches natural blue eyes, denim and sky.
AZURITE
Hotter ochre against a cold accent. The balance point of the family, and the one to reach for first.
KYANITE
Firelight interior. Deep shadow, warm practical on skin, and the cold accent as the only other colour in frame.
ULTRAMARINEsurgical
The hero grade. Full ochre with the blue isolated surgically, so only a deeply saturated cool survives.

Measured, not eyeballed

Every grade in this pack traces back to a number. Shadow, midtone, highlight and skin values were sampled from professional reference frames and each look was then solved against those measurements, so the colour balance was scientifically calibrated and then dialled in by professional colour graders.

The tonal response of the log conversion was verified on a test chart rather than assumed. Middle grey lands where it should and the highlights roll off to a soft shoulder instead of clipping.

Format 33 x 33 x 33 .cube
Files 42, twenty one looks in two versions
Log conversion Log to Rec.709, baked in
Tone response 18% grey at 42 IRE, 90% white at 84 IRE
Highlights Soft shoulder, no hard clip
Neutral axis Monotonic on all 42 files

How to use them

Every look is built at full strength on purpose, so there is somewhere to go. For most footage the usable range is a 60 to 75 percent mix. Take it to 100 percent when the look is the point of the shot.

Files are named for the look, with the version in brackets, so you can see what you are loading before you load it: OCHRE [REC709] for footage already in Rec.709, and OCHRE [Log to Rec709] for log material. The log versions have the conversion baked in, so they need nothing in front of them.

Works with

Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Avid Media Composer, Photoshop, Affinity Photo, and anything else that loads a standard .cube file. Mac and Windows.

What a LUT does, and what it does not

These reproduce tonal response, highlight shoulder, shadow toe and colour relationships. They will not give you grain, halation, gate weave or resolution, because those come from the format, the lens and the negative rather than from a colour transform. If you are chasing the full large format feel, this is one layer of it and a good one, but it is a layer.

Results vary with your source. Exposure, white balance, lighting and wardrobe all affect where a grade lands. These are a starting point for a grade, not a replacement for one.

SIROCCO consists of original colour grades created by FCPX Full Access. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or connected to any film, studio, production company, distributor, streaming service or filmmaker. No film title, character, location, logo, artwork or trademark is referenced, and no frame of any film was used in creating these LUTs. Look names are ordinary descriptive words drawn from meteorology, geology and the natural world. Any resemblance in tone or palette to existing work is the result of photographing similar subjects under similar light.
